Can reducing your carbon footprint help you get fit? We think so and here’s the skinny on how helping the environment in San Diego helps your waistline! Show us your healthy environmental ideas #sdhlgreen
Hot? Turn off the fans! Yes, you read that correctly! Turn off the fans and grab the family or co-workers and have a outdoor play/work day! Balboa Park actually has free wifi at over 40 spots inside the park! Some of these free wifi locations include: House of Hospitality, Mingei International Museum, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego Air & Space Museum, San Diego Hall of Champions, San Diego History Center, San Diego Museum of Art (partial), Timken Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Man and the San Diego Automotive Museum.
You can access it by going to your device settings and clicking on the network titled “Balboa Park.” Fresh air, sunshine and a cool breeze will help cut down on stress and lift your mood! While you are there take a hike, stretch and enjoy the outdoors!
Didn’t pack your lunch? Instead of piling in a hot car, wasting gas and not benefiting your body in any way. Choose a local lunch place and walk with co-workers! Walking before you eat can kick start your digestive system, boost your metabolism burning more calories as you eat and the walking burns a few extra calories along the way!
Car2Go is a electric smart car sharing program. The costs are low, there are no extra gas cost and they are fun to drive! Once signed up download their car finder app. Unless your neighbor just got done with their Car2Go chances are you will have to walk a couple blocks to the nearest car. We like walks, scavenger hunts and playing car-napper. 🙂
Biking is a great way to save gas, save the air from fumes and get a workout! There are lots of great biking lanes and more are being added to San Diego all the time. Wear a helmet and watch out for drivers who aren’t watching out for you! Ride the City has a great app that allows you to type in the beginning destination and ending destination and will map a route for you!
San Diego has LOTS of great Farmer’s Markets. Chances are there is one in your neck of the woods that you can walk to. Take the family, get out and meet local vendors AND by some veggie staples and new products to spice up your kitchen!
*Don’t forget your reusable bags for those Farmer’s Market goodies!
Burn calories and grow your own food! Gardening burns anywhere from 200-350 calories an active hour. Don’t have space for a garden? Here are a few local community gardens you can sow your oats in.

Double your recipes and eat small portions over the week. Leftovers will last twice as long, and you’ll use less energy than you would if you cooked multiple meals. Bag and freeze them in small portions to avoid over eating!
Making small changes does impact our environment here in San Diego; it also impacts your waistline in a positive way! Two birds with one stone? We think so!
