San Diego Named One of the Healthiest Places in America
Published on January 16th, 2014
Not surprising to us here at SD Healthy Living that San Diego is a health conscious city but our bragging has been officially been backed up by a study that considers fitness levels, healthiness, and healthcare accessibility by NerdWallet naming San Diego as one of the top 15 healthiest cities in the great USA!
NerdWallet Health, a consumer advocacy website, recently conducted a study on the healthiest places in the United States – and San Diego is in the top 15.
With the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, NerdWallet Health wanted to give Americans a look at the healthiest and fittest places in the USA. NerdWallet Health based its rankings on the following criteria:
• The American Fitness Index
• Percentage of residents who are a healthy weight
• Percentage of residents who engage in physical activity
• Percentage of residents covered by health insurance
• Number of physicians per 100,000 residents
NerdWallet Health ranked San Diego as the 12th healthiest place in the nation. More than 82 percent of San Diego’s residents are covered by health insurance, and the city has 365 physicians per 100,000 residents. San Diego’s residents are also physically active: 81 percent of them partake in physical activity, according to the Center for Disease Control.
“With great weather and a beautiful location, it is easy to understand why San Diego is an active and healthy community,” said NerdWallet Health analyst Napala Pratini. “Local initiatives such as Live Well San Diego have also led the area toward healthier lifestyles.”
