The Power of Social Media

How Social Media Can Help Boost One’s Confidence

Who doesn’t have a Facebook, Twitter, or instagram account these days? Almost everyone has joined at least one social networking site, and developed the need to check them every day, or even every hour. While social networking sites have received a lot of attention, there are still some who are not very fascinated by it.

Unbeknownst to many, socializing online has a lot of benefits, and one of these is that it helps boost one’s self confidence. How? Social networking sites allow people to share photos and special moments with everyone in their circle. This helps create a sense of belonging and acceptance. It also hones ones communication skills:
“Social networking services could be used to hone debating and discussion skills in a local, national or international context. This helps users develop public ways of presenting themselves. Personal skills are very important in this context: to make, develop and keep friendships, and to be regarded as a trusted connection within a network,” shares Digizen.org.

Social networking sites also allow users to stay in touch with friends and family who are thousands of miles away, and keep each other informed on how they are doing overseas. Apart from this, getting in the know of one’s interests and hobbies has never been easier. Poker enthusiasts are kept abreast on fresh news through PartyPoker on Twitter, for instance, where they can get the latest news on their favorite players and sport. Enthusiasts get real time updates on tournaments such as the WSOP and WPT. One of the recent tweets from their account was “PartyPoker NJ to Host $100K Guarnteed Tourney,” on 18 February.

A study led by Cornell University Associate Professor Jeffrey Hancock showed that social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter “reminds us of who we really are and may have a negative effect on self-esteem if that image does match with our ideal, Facebook can show a positive version of ourselves.” This in return, allows people to see themselves in a better light. Once a person feels a sense of acceptance, it becomes easier to communicate or express themselves.

While social networking sites offer a lot of benefits, there are still some precautions one must consider. Perhaps the best rule of thumb here is not to talk to strangers or people who seem shady. If something is too good to be true, then there is a good chance that it actually is.
